It’s a great start for Stranger Things fans to the new year, with Netflix announcing on Instagram that the new third season will drop on 4th July 2019 – its Independence Day in the USA.
Chief Jim Hopper as David Harbour, indicates that Season three probably wouldn’t arrive until 2019. Cindy Holland as Netflix’s vice president of original programming confirmed that season three would not be released until summer 2019, saying however that the delay is worth waiting.
“The Duffer Brothers as a Creator and Shawn Levy as a producer, they understand the stakes are high,” she said. “They are looking to deliver something bigger and better than last year. Its going to be a fantastic season this time, i think. It will be worth the wait.”
David Harbour confirmed on 10 Nov 2018 that he had finished filming – and that he is looking forward to shaving off his moustache.
First hinted at a summer releases that the summer 2019 release ties in with the recent mall teaser.
Shawn Levy as Executive producer and director, said during the Emmys, which perhaps goes some way to explain the additional time required to film season three. He also added that filming would wrap before the year ending.
Also, Netflix recently celebrated the first ever Stranger Things Day on Tuesday 6 November 2018. Millie Bobby Brown shared a message from the cast to mark the occasion and said she couldn’t wait for fans to see the new episodes.
Then came Christmas 2018, another message to all the lovely fans waiting patiently for the new episodes to arrive this year.
Happy holidays from the Upside Down.
For the new episodes the good news is that all of the original cast are on board it means: Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven, Finn Wolfhard’s Mike, Winona Ryder’s Joyce, Noah Schnapp’s Will, Caleb Mclaughlin’s Lucas, Gaten Matarazzo’s Dustin, Natalia Dyer’s Nancy, Charlie Heaton’s Jonathan and fan favourite Joe Keery (Steve) are all set to return.
Season two additions Max (Sadie Sink) and Billy (Dacre Montgomery) are going to return, but sadly Sean Astin’s Bob… We’re still not ready to talk about it.
As for new additions: fresh off last year’s BBC adaptation of Little Women, Daughter of Uma and Ethan - Maya Thurman-Hawke will join up with the main cast as Robin, who plays a new character who uncovers a “dark secret” in Hawkins.
Considering Thurman-Hawke’s age which is 19, we’re wondering that she’ll be part of the older kids’ peer group alongside characters like Jonathan and Nancy – but what could this “dark secret” be? Is it really just that she uncovers the events of the first two Stranger Things seasons, or something new? And will her character end up being a new love interest for jilted Steve?
Storm Troopers star Jake Busey and The Princess Bride as Cary Elwes also added to the line-up as new characters Bruce and Mayor Kline, respectively, and Haters Back Off’s Francesca Reale will be featuring as Heather, a lifeguard at the community pool who becomes the focal point of a “dark mystery”.
Also, Lucas’ sarky little sister Erica which is played by Priah Ferguson, is set to play a much bigger role. In Season three we will see her embark on a “wild mission to save Hawkins from a dangerous and unexpected new threat”, according to a release from Netflix.
In Strange Things Season 2, it tied up a LOT more loose ends than the first, with the portal to the Upside Down now sealed off, now Hawkins lab apparently closed for good and on other side Jonathan and Nancy finally getting together (poor Steve).
However, a Smoke Monster had been terrorizing our heroes (aka the Mind Flayer) land on the roof of the school in the parallel Upside Down dimension and the kids’ Snow Ball idyll was marred by the final shot of the series, ready to get revenge for his defeat in the season finale.
We do know that a mall in Hawkins, which is new and will likely become a hangout for the kids in season 3. Steve Harrington, alongside new girl Robin, has gone and got himself a job in an ice cream parlor there – and you can cut the sexual tension between them with a knife in this teaser (ok, you can’t – but we reckon there’s a strong chance that these two going to be romantically entangled in the coming new season.
Also Updated A new behind-the-scenes book, Worlds Turned Upside Down, has confirmed that the series will be set in 1985, less than a year after the events of season two.
Ross Duffer also said in the book “It’s really the final summer of their childhood”. “They have to deal with growing up, along with these complicated new relationships. They’re also starting to fall apart a little bit and might be they don’t love playing Dungeons & Dragons as much as they used to. Naturally, that’s going to generate conflict.”
In January Executive Producer Shawn Levy told Glamour back that season three would “deal with forces of evil that are new”, but in an interview with the Duffer brothers suggests that the usual Upside Down monsters will likely still to be in the picture.
Ross Duffer told reporter about he door is hut on the Mind Flayer, but not only is it still there in the Upside Down, it’s very much aware of the kids, and particularly Eleven,”.
“Now, it knows that she’s out there. We wanted to end on a little bit of an ominous noteIt had not encountered her and her powers until that final episode.”
Girl who is named after last of Eleven’s sister never seen with the super powered illusionist escaping the police at the end of episode seven and apparently still keen on taking Eleven on a mission of vengeance against the person who wronged them.
In fact, it is already mentioned how abruptly her story ends, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Kali and her Warriors gang turned up in Hawkins to cause trouble in the next season, and with her mind bending powers, we’re betting that she could cause a lot of trouble and damage along with that.
Well it seems likely to finally get a break at the end. Because After two season of suffering, being covered in alien goop and screaming in fields, also seems that young Naoh Schnapp might finally get to play a normal teenage boy, according to one of the series’ creators.
Matt Duffer told THR “I feel like we really put Will through the wringer and maybe now we’re going to give him a break at least.”
Lastly, we’ve been promised more “dad Steve”, and the continuation of his bromance with Dustin.
Levy told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ll definitely show some more of Steve Harrington in season three, and I’ll say precisely that we won’t be abandoning the Dad Steve magic,”
“Without saying anything more, but I literally feel that we were walking along and we stumbled onto a gold mine with Dad Steve.”
